Meet the Staff

We realize that we have not succeeded in answering all of your questions. Indeed, we know that we have not answered any of them completely. The answers we have provided only serve to raise a whole new set of questions, which lead to more problems, some of which we weren't even aware were problems in the first place. To sum it all up, in some ways we feel we are confused as ever, but we believe we are confused on a higher level and about more important things.

Kari Coburn

Director

Kari Coburn

As director of the Office of Institutional Analysis and Planning, Kari is responsible for providing information that will enhance the quality of the decision-making process at the university's executive level. Kari is charged with supporting the information needs across all vice-presidential areas and providing leadership in the areas of data access and data management. Kari received both her Bachelor of Arts degree in experimental psychology and Master of Public Administration degree at UNLV. Kari has directed the office since 1980. The accompanying photo reflects the challenges of moving from hand drawn graphs and dumb terminals to overseeing the design of web applications and data warehouses, all in the same office. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her husband and two grown children, traveling, wine tasting, cooking, jogging, reading, and tending her herbs and flowers.

Diane Muntal

Associate Director

Diane Muntal

Diane Muntal has earned her title of Associate Director, having planned, coordinated and edited 28 of the 29 fact books, Selected Institutional Characteristics, published by the Office of Institutional Analysis. Diane earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in French Language and Literature from New York University. After immersing herself in French culture studying and working in Paris, France, she headed west, and completed a Master of Arts degree in French Language and Literature at UNLV while working for the Department of Foreign Languages. Because statistics is commonly considered a foreign language, she was uniquely qualified to work in the relatively new Office of Institutional Analysis and Planning, established in the late 70's. Besides assisting the Director in designing a variety of ongoing and ad hoc institutional research studies, she specializes in faculty salary and compensation analyses, and in data on UNLV's peer institutions. Diane is adept at meeting accreditation and professional association reporting requirements, and has developed a unique relationship with college guide publishers. In her spare time, she earned a Master of Public Administration, while single handedly guiding two children through early childhood. The next few years will be spent trying to keep up with the more recently hired technologically savvy wunderkind in the office, and paying college tuition.

Mike Ellison

IR Systems Analyst

Mike Ellison

Mike came to UNLV in March 1996 as a computer programmer and joined the Office of Institutional Analysis & Planning in October 2001. His background includes experience developing data-intensive PC, Macintosh, and Internet applications using C, C++, Pascal, Java, Visual Basic, ASP, PowerBuilder, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office, and a variety of SQL-compliant relational database systems. Mike holds a B.A. in Music Education from the University of Iowa and prior to moving to Las Vegas, he taught public school music classes in the midwest. In addition to his programming and systems work, Mike still occasionally teaches computer classes, holding the MCT and MCP professional certifications from Microsoft. Mike and his wife have two children, an ten-year old boy and a five-year old girl.

Christina Drum

IR Programmer Analyst

Christina Drum

Christina joined the Office of Institutional Analysis & Planning in December 2001. Her responsibilities include supporting decision-making at UNLV through developing applications and data systems, analyzing and interpreting institutional data, and communicating findings in a variety of formats. Prior to accepting a position with UNLV's Office of Information Technology in 1999, Christina lived in upstate New York, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, with a concentration in Women's Studies, at Cornell University. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Ethics and Policy Studies here at UNLV, and is the 2005 recipient of the UNLV Alumni Association Outstanding Thesis Award. Professionally, Christina has enjoyed working with people, data, and technology in a range of educational settings. Her "spare-time" diversions include painting, writing, traveling, hiking, teaching Critical Thinking and Reasoning (Philosophy 102), and spending time with her partner and their young daughter.

Lynne Personius

University Data Quality Administrator

Lynne Personius

Lynne joined the Office of Institutional Analysis & Planning in April 2006 as University Data Quality Administrator, a role that is new at the University. Responsibilities include creating a data model for UNLV that prepares us to meet the needs of the University administration for information with ever increasing accuracy and efficiency. Lynne graduated from the State University of New York, Albany with a BA degree in history. She worked for IBM in Vermont before joining Cornell University, where she stayed for 32 years in progressively more responsible positions. Her last 16 years at Cornell were as Director of the Library Technology Department. Lynne left upstate New York with her husband in 2001 and moved to Las Vegas to follow their two daughters. For the next 5 years she worked for the Las Vegas Review-Journal as Manager of Applications Systems.

Joi Taylor

Administrative Assistant IV

Joi Taylor

Joi moved to Las Vegas in 2005 to be closer to her family, which includes 4 of the most precious nieces and nephews. She was raised in Alaska and received a B.A. in Psychology from Whitworth University. The five years after graduating from college Joi worked at various nonprofit agencies in Anchorage, AK and Portland, OR. These experiences confirmed to her how much she valued the unique challenges and rewards associated with working at a university or college. Therefore, she is also currently pursuing a M.Ed. at UNLV specializing in Higher Education Management. Sandy the Squirrel knows how to keep SpongeBob on track but also has lots of fun in her unusual ocean home. Very similar to how Joi feels being an administrative assistant and a Northwest girl living in a desert.
